Description

Ka Mo'olelo O Nana'ue, The Legend of Nana'ue. Carved on a slab of pine and scorched with butane. It dimensions are 55"x28" and is almost 2" thick. Ancient Polynesian folklore is filled with exciting stories of Kupua, one who is half god and half man with supernatural powers including the ability to change form. In Nana'ue's case he held the ability to change from kane to mano or man to shark. This is a story of a renegade kupua where Nana'ue developed an insatiable appetite for human flesh. While the women of his village were hunting for opihi, a saltwater snail, on the rocks of the seashore Nana'ue would move in behind them and push them into the ocean. He would then jump in after and upon touching the water he would transform into a ferocious shark and devour them. The men of the village soon discovered who was to blame and plotted to kill the kupua. This storyboard captures the chase where Nana'ue is running for his life as he is being pursued. He makes it to the water's edge and jumps in before he is detained, transforms into a shark and swims to the island of Maui where he settles in a new village only to repeat the cycle of killing in his new home.
