Hawaiian Ivory Makau

This very beautiful makau made of ivory, is a hook made from legal pre-ban Elephant ivory that was acquired from "Ming's Jewelry" in Chinatown at auction after it closed. This ivory is all from stock that had been purchased before 1970. The distinct patina and Schreger pattern is apparent on the hand polished surface of this single-barbed style hook. The Makau is 2-1/4"Long x 1-3/8"wide, it is lashed to a tan waxed marine polyester 3-ply Kaula/necklace.
