Description
The Hawaiian Poi Pounder was an implement, usually made of stone,
that was used to mash taro into poi, the Hawaiian food staple.
The island of Kauai was the only island where women were allowed to
pound poi. The taro was actually mashed with a kneading motion
rather than pounded.
The inspiration for this drawing of a broken poi pounder, being put back
together with pieces still missing, is in direct proportion to the Hawaiian
people's struggle in their everyday lives, trying to restore their culture.
It is through this particular piece of art that I thank my captain (Kalepa)
and the rest of the Polynesian Voyaging Crew, for putting back many of
the missing pieces and restoring pride to the Hawaiian culture.
