Description

WA'A PELELEU - Built for King Kamehameha I for the invasion of Kauai between 1796 and 1801. He had a fleet of approximately 20. The largest one, 70 feet in length, was rigged with a European type sail, while other features and the exterior design were Hawaiian. The Peleleu fleet arrived at Oahu in 1803. A cholera epidemic broke out in 1804, wiping out many of Kamehameha's men. The expedition was called off and the canoes were left to rot in the sun on the shores of Waikiki.
