Description
As a young boy, my grandfather talked about how his grandfather (Hailama) had a canoe house near the mouth of Limahuli stream in Haena, our family property. He told me that within the canoe house, his grandfather had a canoe that was built in the old style. Although it was no longer in use due to deterioration, it was still used to dry the fishing nets draped over it. In 1946, a Tsunami devastated Haena on April 1st, (April Fool's Day). With it went the canoe and it was never found again. This canoe drawing depicts what I visualize my great-grandfather's canoe would have looked like in it's prime.
