On Friday mornings, a group of artists converges on the warm pond near Kapoho, called Puala'a, and I joined them to paint this view from the pavilion down toward the pool through kamani, milo and palm trees. The pond has great significance for local Hawaiians, who come to cleanse, heal and bless in the water heated by their volcano goddess Pele. But it is also a joyous picnic and swimming spot for families enjoying the warm sheltered water.
