It is there that they became friends and fluent in the hawaiian language. Since then, both Henani and 'Olu have returned as lecturers for the same Hawaiian Studies Department.
Using his formal training, Henani worked as a graphic artist for the ’Aha Punana Leo hawaiian language revitalization program in Hilo which helped to further his cultural experience and knowledge. Both have worked at 'Aha Punana Leo towards initiatives in revitalizing Hawai'i's indigenous marine life, such as limu, 'opihi and varieties of native fishes. 'Olu's developing cultural perspective and knowledge, along with his formal training in marine biology, became instrumental in coordinating that effort.
Many opportunities were also afforded them to train on the Hokule'a as well as Hokualaka'i under the direction of Chad Baybayan, allowing for further grounding of their cultural perspectives in the art of traditional wayfinding and voyaging. Henani used this combined knowledge as a high school teacher at Ke Kula ’O Nawahiokalani’opu’u, a hawaiian immersion K-12 school in Kea’au, Hawai’i Island. 'Olu has used his knowledge of Hawai'i's oceans to develop an elementary and intermediate level marine science program at the same school.
Henani and ’Olu are proud of the hawaiian culture and its precious language.
